The first idea for the game Grandpa's Dirt Rally was actually to try to turn the photoshop image of Stephen Hawking's Pro Wheelchair into a real game. After noticing that there were no finished 3d models of a skate park, the ideas began to flow. What could you do for a fun game? What happens if you make a rally game, but instead of a car, it is a person in a wheelchair. After a while I came up with the name Grandpa's Dirt Rally with the idea that it would be Grandpa who would race on a dirt rally track.
I started making the game in the game engine Unity. I had no major plans for this game, but did it mostly for fun. After the first day, I then had a game with a working start menu, break menu, timer, course and of course grandpa.
But there were still things that needed to be fixed. In version 2.0, a reset button had been added so you could start over on the track. A countdown timer was also added before the time started. I also created a local multiplayer mode where one person drives as Grandpa, and the other as Grandma.
In version 2.1 I added a new course. This track was inspired by the TV series The Sipsons. The track was complete with a soundtrack and real textures from The Simpsons. This banana was only added in single player mode, but was later added in multiplayer mode. I also added a course selection menu, so you could choose if you wanted to play course one or two.
Version 2.2 was created later which had a new look on the start menu, but was the same old game. I added two new courses to the game, and fixed them so that they were available for multiplayer mode. It was also here that I changed the name of my "company" from TEDyBOX Games to Weebesoft.
But after version 2.2, it all stopped. I'm getting tired of just adding tracks, and not being able to do anything more. Since the basis of the game was intended to be a game I did mostly for fun, the game had no good basis. I made some exclusive versions for Easter and my birthday. But those versions had only small changes made to them. That's when I decided to start over. Version 3.0 would have a completely new design, with its own tracks, new characters, new vehicles, and much more. And that's where we are today. I'm still working on making version 3.0, which will take some time to do as there is a lot of work to be put in to get a good game.
So that's the story behind Grandpa's Dirt Rally. Hope you enjoy playing this game!
